HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

The HHW collection facility will be closed on July 3, 2021

RHD & DISTEMPER IN OUR WILDLIFE
The Animal Center is currently tracking two diseases in our wildlife populations; Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) and Distemper. Here are ways to keep your pets safe.
Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHDV) is a serious viral disease found in wild and domestic rabbits.

  • Spread by rabbit-to-rabbit contact via contaminated urine, feces, food, bedding, and fur.
  • Rabbits may show symptoms such as loss of appetite, lethargy, fevers, seizures, bleeding from nose, mouth, or rectum, and sudden death.
  • Since July 2020, five cases have been confirmed in San Bernardino County.
  • It is not transferrable to humans.

How to Protect Your Pet Rabbit.

  • Prevent contact with wild rabbits.
  • Keep domestic rabbits indoors.
  • House rabbits off the ground when possible.
  • Avoid contact with rabbits that do not reside in your own home.
  • Report deceased, injured, and sick rabbits found in RC to the Field Services Division.

In the past few months, the Animal Center has responded to an increase in the number of sick raccoons exhibiting symptoms consistent with Canine Distemper Virus.

  • Distemper is a contagious disease that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous system in dogs, cats, and wildlife (including raccoons).
  • Distemper Virus in cats is called Panleukopenia.
  • Signs of Distemper include fever, heavy eye and nasal discharge, lethargy, and neurologic deficiencies.
  • Distemper is often fatal. Dogs that may survive have permanent neurologic damage.
  • Distemper and Panleukopenia are not transferrable to humans.

How to Protect your Pets from Distemper:

  • Ensure your dogs and cats are current on their distemper and rabies vaccines.
  • Do not leave pet food outside.
  • Never approach wildlife. Do not let pets interact with wildlife.
  • Report sick or injured wildlife to the RC Field Services Division.
VetCare offers low cost vaccine clinics at the Animal Center on Saturday and Sundays.

REMINDER: FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL IN
RANCHO CUCAMONGA
The safety of our RCcommUNITY remains a top priority, which is why the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District wants to remind all residents, businesses, and visitors about the dangers of fireworks. With the recent incident earlier this year involving an unexpected fireworks explosion in our region, it is a stark reminder how dangerous fireworks truly are.

Fireworks can cause fires, property damage, injuries and even death. Not to mention, the unexpected loud noises can be traumatic for our sound sensitive neighbors including our veterans and pets.

For this reason, all fireworks are prohibited in the City of Rancho Cucamonga, including safe and sane fireworks. To report the use or sales of illegal fireworks, contact the Fire District during normal business hours at 1-909-477-2770. After hours and on weekends, report to non-emergency dispatch at 1-909-941-1488. And fireworks can always be reported via the City’s RC2GO Reporting Portal. We encourage you to be as specific as possible when reporting, including specific addresses when possible. Your efforts to report fireworks help keep our community safe.

The Fire District also provides the opportunity to surrender fireworks at any time, no questions asked. Give us a call at 1-909-477-2770 or email us at RCfire@CityofRc.us to schedule a pick up.

We hope you join us in this community-wide effort to decrease injuries and preventable fires and we encourage you to enjoy a professional fireworks display whenever possible, as they are monitored and managed for the safety of others. Your Fire District wants you to celebrate a great holiday, but please be safe and keep your fellow neighbor in mind.
State Makes Plans for Reopening and “Mega Events”

In mid-May, the State provided an update on the Beyond the Blueprint Framework for the State’s June 15 reopening. In less than three weeks, the State will clear all industry and business sectors listed in the current Blueprint Activities and Business Tiers Chart to return to usual operations with no capacity limits or physical distancing requirements, with limited exceptions for what the State is calling “mega events.”

The State defines “mega events” as planned public or social occasions that include over 5,000 participants or spectators indoors and over 10,000 outdoors. Examples include conventions, shows, nightclubs, concerts, sporting events, theme parks, fairs, festivals, large races, and parades. Verification of full vaccination or a negative test result will be required for indoor mega events and recommended for outdoor mega events.

Verification can take the form of written or even verbal self-attestation. A person making reservations or purchasing tickets for a large group can attest on behalf of the entire group. There will be no restrictions on capacity for mega events or social-distancing requirements. Current State guidance on masks will apply to mega events.
Employers will be subject to the Cal/OSHA COVID-19 Prevention Emergency Temporary Standards (ETS), if applicable to them, and CDPH will continue to provide updated guidance for youth, healthcare, and high-risk congregate settings. Learn more at SBcovid19.com
